2017 APEC University Leaders Forum in Da Nang Discusses Industry 4.0 Era Issues
The APEC University Leaders’ Forum – co-hosted by the Ministry of Education and Training Vietnam, Vietnam National University Hanoi, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities – was held in Da Nang on November 8, 2017, as part of the series of activities for the 2017 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week and the APEC CEO Summit.
Forum participants included Dr. Christopher Tremewan, Secretary General of APRU; Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Vietnam; Dr. Nguyen Kim Son, President of Vietnam National University Hanoi; and Dr. Nguyen Hong Son, Vice President of Vietnam National University Hanoi, together with nearly 60 representatives from universities (including five Vietnamese universities, namely the national universities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the University of Da Nang, the University of Science and Technology and the University of Economics and Business in Hanoi), the industry sector, businesses, and government within the APEC region. The primary goals of the forum were to address the problem of a lack of scientific data and analysis, and to facilitate regional competitiveness under Industry 4.0.
The Asia Pacific region has lively economies and a population of more than 2.08 billion. APEC member economies account for 39% of the world’s population, 57% of the world’s GDP, and 47% of world trade.
Dr. Nguyen Kim Son, the president of Vietnam National University Hanoi pointed out that the APEC region also has knowledgeable innovative universities that will play a leading role in the Industry 4.0 era, and in creating value for society. The forum serves as a platform for leading research universities within the region to strengthen their bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation, and this will contribute to creating new links between universities and industry and broader cooperation between nations.
Ms. Chang Shu-Ching, Third Secretary at TECO in Hanoi also attended the forum, and spoke about Taiwan-Vietnam educational cooperation with Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc, the new Deputy Minister of Education and Training Vietnam; Mr. Pham Chi Cuing, Deputy Director General of the International Cooperation Department of MOET, Vietnam; Dr. Nguyen Kim Son, president of Vietnam National University Hanoi; and Dr. Hoang Minh Son, president of Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
