French Graduate Institutes of Education welcome Taiwanese Students

Following the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in France and the network of Institutes of Education, known in French as les ESPE (Ecoles Supérieures du Professorat et de l'Education) in October last year, France will be welcoming two students from Taiwan for the 2018‒2019 academic year.

ESPE is a national network with 32 member Institutes of Education, each of which is jointly governed by the French Ministry of Education and the local educational authority where a particular institute is located. These institutes are in charge of training and issuing qualifications to primary and secondary teachers in France.

Current students in Taiwan who have already completed their undergraduate studies, who have suitable French language proficiency, and who meet all the Ministry of Education criteria can apply for these two vacancies by mailing their application to National Sun Yat-sen University by May 31. The vacancies are particularly suitable for students who have majored in teaching French or teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

The selection of the two successful applicants will be jointly undertaken by National Sun Yat-sen University and the General Inspector for Chinese Teaching of the French Ministry of Education, and the latter will be responsible for their subsequent placement at a suitable ESPE. The successful applicants will have to register as a student in the first year of the MEEF master’s degree program in the Modern Languages Department, Secondary Education Division at their host ESPE. They will also work as a teaching assistant with a teacher of Chinese for between six hours a week (at the host ESPE or a nearby university) and 12 hours a week (in a nearby secondary school).

During their 10-month stay in France, the students will receive a monthly stipend of 24,000 NTD from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. The host ESPE will reciprocate by providing accommodation and food, free of charge. Each host ESPE will also assign a tutor to provide the visiting student with support regarding their academic work and their teaching assistant duties. At the end of their stay, each host ESPE will send a report on their work performance as a teaching assistant, as well as on their own academic studies and the credit points earned at the respective ESPE, to the individual students and to National Sun Yat-sen University.
