Lancaster University Taiwanese Student Society Wins National Award in the U.K.

The Lancaster University Taiwanese Student Society in the U.K. won a Runner-Up award in the Best Cultural and Faith Society category in the 2018 National Societies Awards. Emily Chi, president of the Lancaster University Taiwanese Student Society, and executive officers Kelly Chi and Huang Man-Li, attended the awards ceremony, held at Cardiff University Students’ Union in Wales.

Over 600 societies from 130 universities located throughout the United Kingdom received nominations and Mr Ouyang Yen-Heng, director of the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, praised the Taiwanese Student Society at Lancaster University for standing out among a highly competitive field of nominees. They were one of six student societies that made the short-list in the cultural and faith category.

Since being officially registered in 2015, the Lancaster University Taiwanese Student Society has actively promoted Taiwanese culture and provided a communication platform for overseas Taiwanese students as well as assisting them in many ways. It encourages Taiwanese students to visit primary schools in Lancaster in their spare time, as cultural volunteers, to introduce different aspects of Taiwan’s rich culture.

The Lancaster University Taiwanese Student Society hosts celebrations and events for both Taiwanese and other students to take part in to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival, Winter Solstice, Lunar New Year, Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and indeed, every major Taiwanese festival. From time to time, it also organises activities such as Taiwanese cultural film screenings, calligraphy evenings, and day-trips.

The support and encouragement of the Education Division has contributed to the success of the Lancaster University Taiwanese Student Society. The Education Division urges Taiwanese students in the UK to participate actively in Taiwanese Student Societies, and it provides resources to assist their development.
