UHD Students Learn about Taiwan’s World Acclaimed Foods and Education at the 2018 Study Abroad Fair

Access to online resources has never been easier, but the Study Abroad Office at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) continues to value face-to-face interaction with students who have an interest in studying abroad.
UHD hosts a Study Abroad Fair every semester to provide helpful information and save students the hassle of searching for it online. The fair provides information about degree and language programs available internationally, and also about internships, volunteer work, temporary work, and scholarship opportunities. The university invites its own faculty members, and study abroad opportunity providers located throughout the United States, to participate.
The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston also had a table at this year’s fair presenting materials about opportunities to study in Taiwan, and decorated with Taiwanese postcards about street foods and tourist attractions, that was quite popular. One student came to the table and talked about his love for pearl milk tea, and was amazed to learn about its origin.
UHD professor, Joe Sample, who teaches creative writing about food cultures, led a group of students to Taiwan in 2013 and in 2016. He visited the Education Division’s table to express his support and interest in establishing more exchange programs with Taiwan.
It is estimated that five hundred students attended the fair this year, and the day after the fair, a UHD student, Ms. Sirena Olivan, contacted the Education Division and requested further details of the MOE-funded programs.
