Taiwan Signs Taiwan Studies MOU with SOAS, University of London
On September 20, 2018, the Ministry of Education of Taiwan and SOAS at the University of London, signed a memorandum of understanding pledging to continue their co-operation on the SOAS Taiwan Studies programme. This programme was launched in 1999 to promote and broaden understanding of Taiwan’s politics, history, languages, and culture.
The MOU was signed by Professor Stephen Hopgood, the Pro-Director of SOAS (International), on behalf of SOAS, and by Dr. Nicole Yen-Yi Lee, the Director of the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the United Kingdom, on behalf of the Ministry of Education of Taiwan. The signing took place at the main SOAS campus in London and was followed by an exchange of gifts to celebrate the occasion.
During the signing ceremony, Dr. Lee praised Dr. Dafydd Fell, the director of the SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies, for his long standing work promoting Taiwan Studies in the United Kingdom, and contributing to stronger academic links between the UK and Taiwan. This co-operation has helped SOAS to become a world leader in Taiwan Studies, offering a wide range of related study programmes, and hosting seminars, conferences, festivals, and many other events.
The signing of this latest MOU will see cooperative support of the Taiwan Studies at SOAS continue until at least 2021, and Professor Hopgood and Dr. Lee are both keen to enhance further cooperation between SOAS and the Ministry.
