The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City has been administering the TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) tests in the areas of Vietnam south of Da Nang, for many years.

In 2021, the Education Division administered the tests ten times throughout the year, and despite the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, more than 1,000 applicants were able to take the tests they registered for. It is planning to administer the tests in various parts of Vietnam in 2022, including cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Can Tho, and Dong Thap to meet the continually rising demand.

People sit for the TOCFL tests for a variety of reasons, including to be eligible to apply for university admission or for some scholarships, and simply to assess their Chinese proficiency. The TOCFL tests held at Taipei School in Ho Chi Minh City on December 12, 2021, were the most intensive so far. There were 229 applicants of whom 207 sat for the tests which were conducted all day from 7:30 am. to 6 pm. Given the still serious ongoing COVID-19 situation, strict preventive measures were taken to ensure everyone’s safety. The test takers all had to have their temperature taken and their hands sprayed with alcohol before they were permitted to go into the computer room, and they all had to wear surgical gloves that were provided by the Education Division when they were using the computers. Despite this, the tests all went smoothly.
