Sports Administration launches Golden Plan 2.0: Training of Olympic athletes expanded

Lin Teng-chiao said that Golden Plan 2.0 training has been expanded to five-grade to assist more elite athletes prepare for Paris 2024

Together with the National Sports Training Center, the Sports Administration launched the Golden Plan for Olympics Preparation (Golden Plan 2.0) in January 2022. Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Administration Interim Director-General Lin Teng-chiao said that, on the basis of the three-grade training of the Tokyo Olympic Golden Plan, Golden Plan 2.0 training has been expanded to five-grade to assist more elite athletes prepare for Paris 2024 and train athletes with potential to take part in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics in advance.

Interim Director General Lin Teng-chiao said that Taiwan’s athletes achieved the best medal haul ever at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, taking two gold, four silver and six bronze medals.

 To link up the promotion of the Golden Plan for the 2024 Paris Olympics and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, in the latter half of last year, the National Sports Training Center held four Golden Plan for Olympics Preparation explanatory meetings to which Olympic training squad athletes, coaches and related personnel from various Asian Games and Olympic Games related sport associations were invited. The grading principle, application and selection process, subsidy principle and the related rights and obligations of elite athletes at every level were initiatively explained and consulting provided.

The National Sports Training Center convened the Competitiveness Enhancement Committee in November and in December last year. With reference to Olympics results, international sports event results, world ranking, fitness tests and training situation, related operations for Golden Plan 2.0 including athlete grading and selection were completed. At the same time, to help Golden Plan elite athletes prepare for competition in January this year, the various Olympic and Asian Games single sports associations have been asked to submit the project plans and funding needs for Golden Plan elite athletes. 

The training subjects of Golden Plan 2.0 are divided into two types; 2020 Tokyo Olympics Golden Plan athletes have, according to their results in Tokyo, been directly designated as Golden Plan elite athletes with gold medal potential at the 2024 Paris Olympics and will be given professional personalized training; type two is 2024 Paris Olympics athletes selected and trained 2020-2021, who have, according to competition results and fitness tests etc., been transferred to the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Golden Plan, respectively.

At present, the 2024 Paris Olympics Golden Plan has 72 elite athletes; the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Golden Plan has selected 78 excellent athletes with gold medal potential. Graded, individual and customized training will be conducted; besides, and grade adjustment, entry and withdrawal system will be executed using a rolling mechanism. Athletes with potential to win gold at the Olympics will continue to be selected to build a gold elite echelon that will enhance Taiwan’s international competitive power. 

To continue the success achieved by the Golden Plan at the Tokyo Olympics, together with the National Sports Training Center, the Sports Administration has upgraded to Golden Plan 2.0 and will continue to select more talent. At the same time, taking into account athlete schoolwork guidance and improvement of training environment, together with the National Sports Training Center and various related national sport associations, the administration department will continue to provide the strongest support to athletes to assist Golden Plan athletes achieve good results at the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
