Education Division in Moscow Gives Online Presentation to Teachers and Students at Herzen University in St. Petersburg on Scholarships Provided by Taiwan’s Government and Universities in Taiwan

Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia – also known as Herzen University – invited William Lu, Secretary of the Education Division of the Taipei–Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission (TMECCC), to give an online presentation in early February, 2022 on the scholarship programs provided by the Taiwan Government and by individual universities in Taiwan, to enhance educational cooperation between Taiwan and Russia. Approximately 40 teachers and students engaged in related studies took part.

William Lu outlined the ongoing scholarships, internships and grants offered by the Taiwan government, including Taiwan Scholarships, ICDF Scholarships, the Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP), Huayu Enrichment Scholarships, Short-Term Research Awards, Taiwan Fellowships, Ministry of Education APEC Scholarships, Mandarin Chinese Internships for Foreign Students and Teachers, Taiwan Experience Education Programs (TEEP), and the Global Internship Facilitation of Taiwan (GIFT) program, and explained that many individual universities in Taiwan also offer scholarships. Some programs require Chinese language proficiency and he gave details of the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL).

He encouraged Russian students and teachers to take an opportunity to visit Taiwan to study or for short-term research. The presentation was warmly received and ten of the Herzen University students raised questions.

In addition, the Education Division told the university how it could facilitate cooperation between Herzen University and suitable universities in Taiwan, and about the possibility of Herzen University inviting Mandarin Chinese teachers from Taiwan, and engaging in mutual cooperation in the fields of arts. St. Petersburg, where Herzen University is located, is the second-largest city in Russia and a significant cultural center, and the Education Division is going to keep working with local academic institutions to promote education and research related interaction between St. Petersburg and Taiwan.
