Ministry of Education Recruits More Foreign English Teaching Talents in 2023

  Building an English-speaking environment for primary/secondary students, the Ministry of Education (MOE) will recruit 411 foreign English teachers and 411 foreign English teaching assistants in 2023. Foreigners whose official or common language is English and who are passionate about English teaching are welcome to apply online at https://tfetp.epa.ntnu.edu.tw/.

    The MOE has implemented the “Foreign English Teacher (FET) program” started up in 2004, and recruits 81 foreign English teachers to local schools each year, which established the foundation for an engaging English learning environment. To achieve the Bilingual Policy 2030, the MOE initiated “Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program (TFETP)” in 2021 to further recruit more foreign English teaching talents; as of January 18th, 501 foreign English talents are recruited in 2022 academic year. In order to raise the incentives teaching in Taiwan, the MOE will subsidize foreign English teaching talents who have been admitted not only monthly salary, health insurance, labor insurance and housing allowance, but also economy class airfare of one accompanying lineal blood relative every school year-end performance evaluation bonus for foreign English teachers, reimbursement for taking certificate class and transportation allowance for foreign English teaching assistants. Besides, the MOE had built a career planning for senior and excellent foreign English teachers to stay or transition to a consultant or counselor assisting Taiwan teachers and junior foreign English teaching talents.

    The MOE will work with local English Teaching Resource Centers and nearby universities to ensure the success of foreign English teaching talents’ teaching performance and cultural adaptation, as well as the collaboration between schools and foreign English teaching talents to create a win-win relationship.

The Eligibility and Salary of Foreign English Teachers and Foreign English Teaching Assistants

Eligibility
  1. The official or common language of the nation (as the nationality shown on the passport) where the applicant is from must be English. Identification of the official or common language of a nation is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan).
  2. Hold a bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited university or college. The list of the accredited universities and colleges is based on the Database for the Reference List of Foreign Universities from the Ministry of Education, Republic of China (Taiwan) website.
  3. Should meet one of the requirements below:
  1. Hold a state-issued teaching license or certificate.
  2. Have taught English courses in accredited foreign schools for more than one year, or have served as a full-time teaching assistant of English courses in domestic public schools that participate in MOE’s program for more than one year, and have met one of the following requirements:
  1. Hold a bachelor’s degree or above in education, English or a related field, and have studied English language teaching methods, teaching assessment, introduction to second language learning and trial teaching for more than 120 hours.
  2. Hold a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate or CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) certificate approved by accredited universities.

The courses offered by the university mentioned in item b in granting the certificates shall meet the following requirements:

  1. The course includes English language teaching methods, teaching assessment, introduction to second language learning and trial teaching.
  2. The course lasts at least 120 hours.
  3. Distance learning courses shall not exceed two thirds of the total course hours.

Salary Holders of bachelor’s degree: NT$ 65,230~85,380. Holders of master’s degree: NT$ 72,760~94,980. Holders of doctoral degree: NT$ 75,950~100,010. (The salary rate is based on the teacher’s highest level of education and years of teaching experience. Teaching experience only refers to full-time teaching positions at a public or state school inside or outside of the R.O.C., or a registered private high or primary school in the R.O.C.. Teaching experience which is less than one year or without a valid teaching license at the time of the employment will not be considered.) The program provides a teaching assistant with a monthly scholarship or salary of NT$48,000. Additional benefits involve residential, transportation, and other reimbursements, as apportioned on a monthly basis with base salary.
