University of Bristol Students Enjoy an Enriching Summer in Taiwan with Support from the Turing Scheme & Taiwan's Ministry of Education
A group of 30 students from the University of Bristol enjoyed a month-long language immersion experience this summer at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung. As well as improving their Mandarin skills, during their stay in Taiwan they took part in a diverse array of activities, including maritime education and windsurfing field trips, and visits to historic sites.
Their stay was supported by the Turing Scheme, a UK government program that was established in 2021, following Britain's exit from the EU's Erasmus program. It provides funding to a wide range of academic and vocational training institutions for their students to experience learning or professional training overseas. The University of Bristol applied for Turing Scheme funding for this group of its students to study Mandarin in Taiwan. and Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE) provided a special grant to help the Bristol students with expenses not covered by the Turing Scheme.
The University of Bristol is considered a leading research-oriented institution in the UK. It is a member of the Russell Group, a group of 24 world-class, research-focused universities in the UK that are the equivalent of Ivy League universities in the US. Individual students have previously applied for and received funding to study in Taiwan but this student group from the University of Bristol is the first from a British university that has received Turing Scheme funding to do so.
Their stay in Taiwan gave the students a deeper understanding of Taiwan's rich history and cultural heritage, and they were very grateful to both the Turing Scheme and the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK. The MOE looks forward to welcoming more students from the UK to Taiwan with the assistance of the Turing Scheme.
