Taiwan’s Outstanding Success in the 20th International Junior Science Olympiad in 2023

The six gold-prize winning students & the team of scientists from National Taiwan Normal University

A team of six students representing Taiwan participated in the 20th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), held in Bangkok in 2023 and achieved remarkable success. They each won a gold medal and also won a gold medal for group experiments, claiming first place in the overall rankings. The International Junior Science Olympiad presents competition tasks related to mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and/or earth science to foster teenagers' interest in science.

The six students selected by the Ministry of Education to represent Taiwan were: Wu Ssu-Chien吳思謙and Yen Tzu-Chiao 顏子喬 from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Chan Wei-Chun詹緯濬and Lai Ching-Yu賴敬宇 from Taipei Municipal Dunhua Junior High School, and Hung Ching-Cheng洪靖承 and Su Cheng-Hsuan蘇程玹 from Tainan Municipal Jiansing Junior High School. Adding to their accomplishments, Yen Tzu-Chiao 顏子喬 from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School received the award for the highest score of any of the 304 participants from 54 countries or regions in the competition.

After being selected, the students underwent rigorous training with a team of scientists from National Taiwan Normal University: Professor Lu Chia-Jung呂家榮, Professor Lu  Kwok-Tung呂國棟, Professor Chang Yung-Ta 張永達, Professor Fu Tsu-Yi 傅祖怡, and Associate Professor Liu Yi-Hsin 劉沂欣. On November 30, they accompanied the team of students to Bangkok for the competition.

Ouyang Yen-Heng, the Director of the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand, attended the award presentation ceremony on December 9 and conveyed a message from Minister of Education, Pan Wen-Chung, congratulating the students on their efforts and achievements.

After the competition the students visited Chiang Mai, Thailand, for a cultural and educational experience, to broaden their horizons before returning home on December 13.
