Online Information Session for German Students on Studying in Taiwan
On Friday, March 1, 2024, Melanie Faber from the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany hosted an online information session for German students who have passed the first stage to be awarded a Huayu Enrichment Scholarship for language study in Taiwan, or a Taiwan Scholarship to undertake a degree program there. The purpose of the session was to provide details about the scholarships and a broad range of topics to prepare for student life in Taiwan.
Twenty-five people took part: Ms. Weng Chin-Ying, Director of the Education Division; Ms. Tung Peilan, Acting Manager and Study Counsellor at DAAD Information Center, the German Academic Exchange Service office in Taipei; two former scholarship holders, and twenty students.
The session began with a presentation by Ms. Faber, in which she explained the next steps in the process of obtaining a scholarship. Then, she discussed going to Taiwan in the 2024-25 academic year. These included applying for and being accepted by a language centre or university in Taiwan, and then applying for a visa. Ms. Tung then talked about life in Taiwan, including finding accommodation, and gave details of important German institutions there, such as the German Institute Taipei which represents Germany in Taiwan. The students had the opportunity to ask questions throughout these presentations.
Two former scholarship holders then each gave a brief report about their experiences as a student in Taiwan. Their enthusiasm about their stay in Taiwan undoubtedly heightened the anticipation of the future scholarship recipients. The two-hour session ended with a Q&A session.
The first online information session for German students to help them make arrangements, and prepare for their upcoming stay in Taiwan, was held in 2023. It was welcomed by the students and is now an integral part of the preparation process for new scholarship awardees.
