Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Partners with Middlebury College Supporting Mandarin Chinese Language Education in the U.S.
On March 25, Cynthia Huang, Director of the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, visited Middlebury College in Vermont to sign a formal cooperation agreement with the college on behalf of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. For five years beginning this year, at least five teaching assistants will be recruited from Taiwan each year to support the summer program at Middlebury’s Chinese School.
Middlebury’s Chinese School, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this summer, is a prestigious tertiary institution with an outstanding reputation for language education. Its intensive Chinese Immersion Program offers an advanced language teaching and training model that attracts learners from around the globe.
This new collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Middlebury College is enhancing Mandarin Chinese language learning opportunities in the United States and deepening educational exchanges. This is further to the widening language education cooperation underway in accordance with the U.S.–Taiwan Education Initiative and Taiwan’s Mandarin Education Enhancement Program.
The U.S.–Taiwan Education Initiative, launched in 2020, is playing an important role in promoting Mandarin Chinese language education in the United States. Taiwan’s Mandarin Chinese language teacher preparation is rigorous and innovative and Mandarin Chinese language teachers from Taiwan bring energy and creativity into their classrooms, as well as democratic values and Taiwan’s rich cultural heritage.
