Sports Administration Secures Executive Yuan Budget, Begins Planning Construction of Taiwan Institute of Sports Science Building
The Sports Administration (SA) has obtained a budget of NT$1.96 billion approved by the Executive Yuan to promote the " Taiwan Institute of Sports Science Building Construction Project." This project aims to improve training facilities and research spaces, strengthen sports science support, and enhance national sports competitiveness overall. The goal is to complete construction by 2029 and begin operations in 2030.
Taiwanese athletes have delivered outstanding performances at international sports competitions in recent years. Besides the tireless efforts of athletes and coaches and the government’s policy support, sports science support and introduction have played a crucial role in athlete training and competition.
With the aim of supporting sports development, the government continues to promote the "National Sports Park Overall Construction and Talent Training Plan," gradually improving various training facilities at the National Sports Training Center (hereafter referred to as the "Training Center"). To further strengthen Taiwan’s sports science soft power and enhance international sports competitiveness, and considering the importance and necessity of developing sports science, the Executive Yuan approved the implementation of the “Act for the Establishment of the Taiwan Institute of Sports Science” (the Institute)from August 1, 2023.
To help the Institute bring into play maximum effectiveness and provide athletes and coaches with timely professional consultation and advice, the current temporary solution involves the use of part of the existing facilities at the Training Center. To ensure long-term operation, the SA proposed the "Taiwan Institute of Sports Science Building Construction Project" in 2024, which includes various office spaces, laboratories, testing spaces, and research facilities for the Institute. This plan was approved by the Executive Yuan on March 21, 2025, marking a big step forward in enhancing the sports science support environment.
The total budget for the " Taiwan Institute of Sports Science Building Construction Project" is NT$1.96 billion, with execution starting in 2025. The preliminary building plan includes one Institute building with one basement floor and six above-ground floors, a semi-outdoor integrated virtual-real training experimental field, and a sports science measurement field. Besides office space, the building will house professional sports science testing, analysis, laboratories, and research centers to support sports science introduction in athlete training and experimental analysis development.
The site for the Institute is located on the east side of the Training Center on land belonging to the Ministry of National Defense’s military school. The SA has been coordinating with the Ministry for land allocation. The entire project is entrusted to the Ministry of the Interior’s National Land Management Agency for professional management. This agency also manages the Training Center’s comprehensive training hall, swimming pool, and tennis courts. Their professionalism and familiarity with the project will further facilitate the construction of the Institute building. The overall project plans to invite bids from architects in the third quarter of 2025, aiming for completion in 2029 and starting operations in 2030.
The SA stated that it will continue to work closely with the Ministry for land allocation, the Institute , and the Training Center to facilitate the project’s progress and complete construction as soon as possible. This will enable the Institute to maximize its functions and help athletes strive for excellent results.
