The Cultural Division of Taipei Economic and Culture Office (TECO) in Houston held the 2013 Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) on Saturday, March 30 at 10303 Westoffice Drive, Houston (phone: 713.789.4995). TOCFL is designed to assess the language ability of applicants who need to study or work where Mandarin Chinese is used as a language of communication. In 2013, there were 123 applicants taking TOCFL in the larger Houston areas, including 44 for Level 2, 36 for Level 3, 19 for Level 4 and 19 for Level 5. The age range of these TOCFL candidates was from 8 to 51 years old, including different ethnic and cultural groups. Currently, TOCFL is held in 28 countries. More than 16,000 candidates have taken TOCFL. Successful examinees will receive a Mandarin Chinese Proficiency Certificate as a credential for being eligible for the “Taiwan Scholarship”, “TOCFL Scholarship” and “Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship” are sponsored by the Ministry of Education for study in Taiwan.
