The LTTC Visits Vietnam to Share GEPT Experience

The Language Training and Testing Center (LTTC) in Taipei, Taiwan is known for successfully developing and administering the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) and for its decades-long dedication to language education. For these reasons Professor Nguyen Hoa, President of the University of Languages and International Studies-VNU in Hanoi invited LTTC’s Executive Director Hsien-hao Liao and other delegates to visit his university, exchange ideas, and provide advice in the field of language testing and assessment.

The government of Vietnam and Vietnam’s top universities are currently jointly working on the National Foreign Languages 2020 Project with the aim of reforming the foreign language education system and improving both teachers’ and students’ English language proficiency. A specific goal is to develop a standardized English proficiency test that best fits local learners’ needs. The University of Languages and International Studies, one of the key members of this national project, hopes to draw on LTTC’s experience in developing, administering and promoting the GEPT.

With assistance from Mr. Aaron Chen, Deputy Counselor of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City, the LTTC delegation also visited three other renowned universities—the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) in Hanoi, USSH in HCM City, and HCM City University of Education—to further their understanding of higher education in Vietnam. The LTTC is exploring the possibility of collaborating with these universities, focusing on foreign language education reform, Vietnamese language teacher training and certification, and Mandarin language education and assessment. A medium-range goal is to further broaden academic collaboration and exchange between Taiwan and Vietnam.
