The Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Australia held the 2013 Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) in Sydney in New South Wales on Sunday September 15 at the Tzu-chi Academy Australia. For the previous 5 years TOCFL has been administered in the state of Queensland, and this paved the way for New South Wales to conduct its own TOFCL testing for the first time.

To date, TOCFL has been well received in Australia and the administration of the test has been smooth and successful. The many participants and their parents feel sure that having a clear recognition of proficiency in the Mandarin language will play an increasingly significant role in today’s job market.

With the assistance of TECO in Sydney, Buddhist Tzu-chi Foundation Australia, Tzu-chi Academy Australia, Mingder Chinese School, and Sydney Victory Mandarin School, 46 participants took the TOCFL examination in New South Wales. Another 103 candidates were registered to sit for TOCFL at three venues in Queensland: Chung-Tian Chinese School of Queensland, University of Queensland at St Lucia campus, and the Southport School (TSS) Gold Coast, on the immediately following weekend (September 22).

TOCFL is designed to assess the language ability of applicants who need to study or work where Mandarin Chinese is used as a language of communication. Successful examinees will receive a Mandarin Chinese Proficiency Certificate as a credential. This makes them eligible to apply for a Taiwan Scholarship, TOCFL Scholarship, and Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, all of which are sponsored by the Ministry of Education for study in Taiwan.
