Mr. Don J. Wang, Chairman of Metro Bank in Houston, established the Don J. Wang Endowed Fellowship in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Utah State University (USU), in partnership with the university’s Foundation in March 2014. Mr. Wang, a successful USU alumnus from Taiwan, contributed an initial gift of US$200,000 to the Fellowship fund. The Fellowship is intended to benefit current USU graduate students from Taiwan, and to give something back to his alma mater, where he earned a master’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences.

The aim of the fellowship is to financially support Taiwanese graduate students who are studying in one of two programs: Applied Economics, or Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences. If no-one from either of those programs puts in a successful application, Taiwanese students enrolled in other programs in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences will then be considered eligible. The TECO Education Division in San Francisco is disseminating information about this fellowship through USU’s Taiwanese Student Association and encouraging students to apply.

Mr. Wang hoped that this endowed fellowship might also help strengthen bilateral educational cooperation between USU and one of Taiwan’s universities. At his request, the TECO Education Division in San Francisco has been working to recommend and facilitate the possibility of establishing a sister-institutional relationship between USU and Taiwan’s National Chung-Hsing University, where Mr. Wang studied for his bachelor degree in Agricultural Engineering. Both universities expressed interest in having further direct talks about this proposal and about potential cooperative programs, such as jointly selecting outstanding students at National Chung-Hsing University to undertake a master's degree or doctorate program at USU, with sponsorship assistance from the Don J. Wang Endowed Fellowship.
