This spring between March 9 and 23, 12 students and 3 teachers from Friedrich Engels Gymnasium, a senior secondary school in Berlin in Germany, undertook a very successful 14-day trip to Taiwan with the help of their partner schools: Taipei Municipal Chenggong High School and Taipei Jingmei Girls High School. Dr. Sebastien Andrees the Friedrich Engels Gymnasium vice-principal visited these 2 senior high schools in Taipei in November last year, and signed agreements to launch the bilateral educational and intercultural exchanges.

During their stay in Taipei, the 15 visitors from Berlin were looked after by selected volunteer-students of Chenggong High School and Jingmei Girls High School. This gave them a chance to see the the daily life of the students at their partner schools. The schools both arranged courses about Taiwan history, martial arts, and Taiwanese foods to give the German students an understanding of local culture. The German students also sat in on classes together with their local partner students. The visiting Friedrich Engels Gymnasium teachers gave talks about their school and about German culture in interactive exchanges.

When they returned home, the students who had been on the exchange gave presentations sharing details of their experiences in Taiwan on May 29 to encourage more students to visit Taiwan next year. Ms. Weng Chin-Ying, Director of the Education Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Germany was invited and she encouraged students to take this opportunity to explore Taiwan. More than 100 teachers and students of Friedrich Engels Gymnasium took part in this friendly event.

The students of Taipei Municipal Chenggong High School and Taipei Jingmei Girls High School are paying a return visit to the Friedrich Engels Gymnasium in early July this year. Friedrich Engels Gymnasium was very excited about this and looking forward to introducing the school and its hometown Berlin to the exchange-students.
