President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) Visits the Republic of Paraguay
President Tsai Ing-wen visited the Republic of Paraguay, Taiwan’s only diplomatic ally in South America, from June 27 to 30. She was accompanied by National Security Council Secretary General Joseph Wu, Foreign Minister David Lee, other government officials, and legislators, and business representatives from the solar energy, textile, and food industries.
On June 28, President Tsai met with her Paraguayan counterpart, President Horacio Cartes at the Presidential Palace and he conferred a Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez Honor Medal, a Paraguayan national medal of honor, on her. She also met with the President of the Senate, Mario Abdo Benítez, and gave an address to the Paraguayan National Congress.
President Tsai inaugurated the new building of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Paraguay later the same day. On this occasion, she was presented with a key to the city of Asuncion by Mayor Mario Ferreiro, as a symbol of the friendship between these two countries.
On June 29, President Tsai hosted a breakfast at her hotel suite for representatives of the Paraguayan scholarship students. During the meeting the president commented on the educational cooperation between Taiwan and Paraguay, which has achieved outstanding results.
The Taiwan Scholarship Alumni agreed and expressed their gratitude for the opportunities Taiwan offers to young people in Paraguay through scholarships and study programs. They also expressed their willingness to keep working together with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Paraguay to strengthen ties between the two countries and to share their experiences as scholarship recipients with other young people in Paraguay to encourage them to also interact with Taiwan.

Later that day, President Tsai attended a ceremony at General Andrés Rodríguez School to acknowledge the donation of computers and tablets to educational institutions in Paraguay at all levels by Taiwan´s ASUS Foundation. During the ceremony, President Tsai thanked ASUS Foundation for donating the computers and expressed her hope that Paraguayan students will have opportunities for better development through information and communications technology.
