Taiwan maintains a strong positive presence in local Chinese speaking communities, and this includes providing international education institutions with quality teachers of Chinese as a Second Language, with the support of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Ministry’s Chinese Teacher Abroad Program in Europe provides selected teachers from Taiwan with a monthly stipend of US$1,500 for up to two years, a round-trip international airfare, and a subsidy of US$300 for teaching materials. The international partner universities in Europe provide matching funds for the salaries of the selected teachers and appropriate benefits.

The University of Vienna in Austria has been working with the Education Division of TECO in Austria to recruit its first such visiting lecturer from Taiwan for the approaching academic year. Wang Hsiang-yuan, the Director of the Education Division of TECO in Austria convinced Prof. Christian Göbel, the Director of the Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies and other professors in the Department of East Asian Studies/Sinology at the University of Vienna that a Chinese teacher from Taiwan could help the students expand their knowledge of understanding of Taiwan and Asia.

The University of Vienna is the oldest university in the German-speaking world, celebrating its 650th anniversary last year. This public university was founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolph IV, and since then it has become one of the largest universities in Europe, with a fine reputation. The University of Vienna is currently the only university in Austria that offers a graduate program in Sinology. The Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies was formally established in the Department of East Asian Studies/Sinology, at the University of Vienna in December 2009 and has received funding support from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education since 2012.

The university received dozens of applications for their first Chinese teacher from Taiwan and students can look forward to the new classes in the coming semester.
