KU Leuven, the most renowned university in Belgium, has a long history of engaging in the field of oriental studies. The study of Buddhism and its related languages at the Faculty of Theology grew and became a full 4-year programme and led to the founding of the Department of Sinology at the Faculty of Humanities in 1979. To this day, this is the leading authority in Belgium on Asia-related research and study. The new Taiwan Studies Chair will further contribute to the future development of Taiwan Studies at KU Leuven and will enhance the university’s collaboration with Taiwan.
