The Minister of Education, Jiunn-Rong Yeh, welcomed Jane Nishida, Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Justin Harris, an EPA senior program manager, to a meeting on October 12, 2018 to discuss future cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. on environmental education.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) worked with the U.S. EPA to hold an International Student Conservation Leadership Summit in San Diego, in August this year. This summit provided an excellent opportunity for high-school students in Taiwan and the U.S. to discuss the serious coastal pollution issues nowadays, and it also gave them a valuable opportunity to experience different learning styles and cultures from each other. As Justin Harris said, “The Taiwan students made a huge impact on the U.S. students”.

Jane Nishida has over thirty years of environmental work related experience in federal and state government, and nongovernmental and international organizations. The U.S. EPA was very happy to see that Taiwanese indigenous students participated in the student conservation leadership summit. “My office deals with not only environmental international issues, but also with tribal issues”, said Jane Nishida. Jiunn-Rong Yeh said that the MOE appreciates the U.S. EPA practice of integrating tribal culture and environmental education.
