At Educational Dedication Awards Ceremony 2008 and an event held in conjunction with the ceremony to commend senior teachers with outstanding performance, Minister of Education Cheng Jei-cheng presented an award to Dr. Juanelva Rose , the first American to win the award. As a missionary, Dr Rose came to Taiwan in 1965 alone and taught general knowledge courses at Tunghai University . Thanks to her efforts, the university set up a music department in 1971.
