President Kirby Yang of Fo Guang University visits Paraguay
Paraguay welcomed a delegation from Fo Guang University of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from March 14 to 19, 2014.
The delegation was led by the university’s president Prof. Dr. Chaur-Shin Yung, who was accompanied by Dr. Ta-Ning Hsieh, Director General of Research and Development, and Dr. Chia-Lin Chang, Director of Academic Exchanges.
During their visit Dr. Yung met with Mrs. Marta Lafuente, Minister of Education of Paraguay. The delegation also visited three universities to re-establish contact with their key administrators: 1. Dr. Pedro Gerardo González, the Rector of the National University of Asuncion; 2. Dra. Carmen Quintana, the Vice-rector of the Catholic University; and 3. Dra. Kitty Gaona, with the Rector of the Autonomous University of Asunción.
The main focus of these visits was to identify areas of academic cooperation and discuss lines of action. Over the years the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and these Paraguayan universities have been working very closely on various projects to improve education in Paraguay.
To date, the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has awarded over 225 scholarships to Paraguayan students to pursue undergraduate and graduate studies at universities in Taiwan. Fo Guang University has been teaching Paraguayan scholarship students in its Chinese Language Center since 2010, and all of them have successfully graduated.
