More than three hundred students at high profile Indonesian public universities—the University of Indonesia, Institute Teknologi Bandung, and Gadjah Mada University—applied for one of several scholarships offered by Taiwan’s government this year. Ten students received a Ministry of Education Taiwan Scholarship, six received a Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, another two students were awarded an International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) Scholarship, and two students received a Ministry of Science and Technology scholarship. These students will be undertaking a wide variety of programs. The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship recipients will be at Mandarin Language Centers, others will be undertaking 2 or 3 years study toward a master’s degree, or a doctorate.
The Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Jakarta held an orientation session on August 11 to congratulate this year's recipients. Ms. Phoebe Yeh, the Deputy Representative, presented the students with their scholarship certificates. She told them that she expected them to study hard but also urged them to travel around and do fieldwork in Taiwan when they have free time. They are taking on the role of young ambassadors, and they can all help promote good relations and interaction between the two nations.
