Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group Showcases Skills and Spirit in Ottawa and Montreal

The Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group gave two public performances in Canada as part of their 2014 tour. The first was in Ottawa at the Howard Darwin Centennial Arena on August 1, and this was followed by their performance in Montreal, at the Pollack Concert Hall of the McGill University on August 3.

The visiting performers are all students from three schools in Taipei: Hongdao Junior High School, Xiyuan Elementary School, and Ming Dao Elementary School. Their performances combine stylish rope skipping, diabolo spinning, and shuttlecock kicking with Taiwanese folk dances and music. They attracted enthusiastic audiences, and the atmosphere was very warm and happy.

The Taipei Youth Folk Sports Group receives funding and support from the Taipei City Government and Taipei City Council. A group has been organized each year for the past 27 years now and has performed in cities of all five continents, earning recognition and praise. The continuous funding and support demonstrates the dedication of Taipei City Government’s Department of Education to folk sports in our increasingly technology driven environment. This year they will tour Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, and New York between July 28 and August 10.

The young performers were led by Chen Shun-he, Secretary-General of Taipei City's Department of Education. Staff from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada gave them all a very warm welcome and looked after local communication, coordination, and promotion of their events. They also attended the performances to show their support and enjoy the performances.
