On Sunday, November 16, 2014, the Education Division of TECO-NY proudly presented “Salute to Broadway”, a cabaret production featuring an all-Taiwanese student cast, and transforming the lobby of its office building into a musical cabaret venue, and bringing some of Broadway’s most beloved numbers to TECO-NY. This was a first for TECO-NY.
A Taiwanese student, Chen Ching-Hui, had assembled a group of talented students from Taiwan who are studying performing arts in the greater New York region, in response to an invitation by the Education Director, Ms. Charlin Chang. The team planned and produced the entire hour-long event, including the wardrobe, lighting, and sound, around the theme of “literature”. They performed classic well-loved numbers from musicals which were originally all adapted from literature: West Side Story, Cabaret, Les Miserables, Gypsy, and Seussical.
The event drew a capacity crowd, more than 150, and many had to stand. The audience included off-Broadway producer Tony Stimac, and Double Image Theater Lab co-founder and puppetry artist Spica Wobbe (Cheng Shu-Yun), originally from Taiwan. They both generously chatted and posed for photographs with the students after the show.
This energetic production left the audience wanting more! And they got their wish: the students were scheduled to present the second of three cabarets, focusing on the eternal theme of “love”, on December 6.
