2016 World Taekwondo Junior Championships
The 2016 World Taekwondo Junior Championships were hold in the city of Burnaby in Canada from November 16 to 20. A Chinese Taipei team of 20 junior high school and senior secondary school athletes from across Taiwan took part. Mr. Jung Hua Lien, the Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese Taipei Taekwondo Association led a delegation of 28 people including the director, trainer, and coaches.
This year’s World Taekwondo Junior Championships brought together more than 800 young male and female taekwondo athletes from 86 countries, including Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Chinese Taipei, Croatia, Cyprus, India, Iran, Mexico, Mongolia, the Philippines, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Turkey, and the United States.
Team Chinese Taipei gave an outstanding performance in the tournament, winning one gold, four silver and two bronze medals. This was the most ever won by the Chinese Taipei team. Lo Chia-Ling won the gold medal in the female under-52kg category; Chang Cheng-Chun won silver in the male under-45kg category, Sung Chia-Yin won silver in the female under-49kg category, Yen Yen-Hsin won silver in the female under 59kg category, and Pan Yun-Ci won silver in the female above 68kg category; Tai Ting Wei won bronze in the male 48kg category; and Huang Sheng-Lun won bronze in the male under 51kg category.
In addition to these individual achievements, all the teams were ranked by points. The Chinese Taipei male team came in 5th place, behind Korea, Russia, Turkey, and Iran, and the female team finished in 2nd place, after Iran. Both were also awarded a trophy for being among the top five teams. Taiwan’s Education Minister Dr. Pan Wen-Chung and Dr. Ho Jow-Fei, Director General of the Sport Administration, each sent a congratulatory letter to the teams to acknowledge their achievements bringing honor for Taiwan.
