Education and Careers Expo 2018 organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council

Education and Careers Expo 2018 organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from February 1st to February 4th, 2018. The Expo was open to the public and admission was free. Natalie Kwok, the Deputy Education Project Supervisor at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office went to the Expo on the first day, 1st February. The Expo consisted of an Education Zone and a Careers Zone. It hosted 870 organizations from 21 countries and regions. The categories of major exhibitors comprised colleges and polytechnics, universities, vocational training institutions, language schools, educational institutions outside Hong Kong, consulting firms, professional associations, private enterprises, government departments, and semi-government organizations. Consultants from universities all over the world provided information on their admission procedures, entry requirements, and campus life, and consular staff from various countries offered information about applying for a student visa and living in their countries. Private enterprises and government departments provided information on different job duties and application procedures, and attendees interested in employment could submit their resumes at the exhibition. In addition to the overseas universities, local universities and educational institutions – including the Vocational Training Council, Hang Seng Management College, and the YMCA College of Careers - provided abundant information about local education opportunities. Visitors could get ample information on how to embark on a creative education path. The Expo also included a range of seminars providing information on education, job nature and requirements for careers. (for details of the seminars, see: http://hkeducationexpo.hktdc.com/pdf/2018/event/ECE2018.pdf ) Two seminars on the first day were presented in Cantonese. The first one, called Courses the Program Anchors Took, was presented by Karen Cheng and Mr. Oscar Lee. Karen was a former news anchor as well as a medical PR agency consultant, while Oscar was the principal anchor of Now TV. Karen and Oscar talked about their education and career experiences. They both stressed that what we learn in universities is just basic knowledge and that we should choose courses in which we are interested. The other seminar presented in Cantonese was organized by the Institute of Advanced Learning. Ms. Jessica Chan, a Senior Marketing Officer, talked about the institute’s professional diplomas in aviation, hospitality, and tourism, and students asked many questions after her presentation. All in all, the exhibition was informative and interactive. Many students came to the Expo in the afternoon accompanied by their teachers and they were able to get a lot of useful information on how to pursue their academic and career goals.
