First Taiwan Film Show Held at Moscow City University
A Taiwanese Film Show was held at Moscow City University (MCU) in March., 2018. This was an initiative of the Education Division of the Taipei-Moscow Economic and Cultural Coordination Commission (TMECCC), jointly undertaken with the Cultural Division of TMECCC, Moscow City University, and the Taiwanese Student Association in Moscow. This was the first time that such event has been held there.
After lengthy discussion, five Taiwanese films were selected – Hear Me (聽說); Jump Ashin! (翻滾吧!阿信), about a young gymnast; Grandma and Her Ghosts (魔法阿嬤); Pushing Hands (推手); and Monga (艋舺), a gangster film set in the 1980s – and screened for five consecutive days. William Lu, Secretary of the Education Division of TMECCC, Nicholas Hsu, Director of the Culture Division of TMECCC, Sandy Lin, President of the Taiwanese Student Association in Moscow, Valentina Vashkyavichus, Deputy Dean of the Chinese Language Department of MCU, and Oksana Malyh, Senior Mandarin Chinese Teacher at MCU, all went to enjoy the film show.
The Taiwanese Film Show attracted at least 50 people each day, to enjoy the rich plots and wonderful acting skills, mainly students learning Mandarin Chinese and faculty members. Each film drew great applause after its screening. After watching them, teachers commented that these films left a deep impression of Taiwan and its culture on the audience, and that they looked forward to similar activities being held more frequently in the future.
