On May 23, Harry Tseng, Representative at the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium visited Ghent University, accompanied by Terry Ting, the Deputy Representative, and Chen Yu-Wen, the Director of the Education Division there. The three were welcomed at the university by the rector, Professor Dr. Rik Van de Walle and Professor Dr. Guido Van Huylenbroeck, the Vice President and Academic Director for Internationalization, then enjoyed a friendly luncheon, together with professors from a number of different faculties who are involved in collaborations with Taiwanese counterparts.
Representative Harry Tseng and Professor Van Huylenbroeck both addressed everyone present. They each expressed their gratitude for the longstanding relationship between Ghent University and Taiwan, and encouraged the further development of academic and research collaboration. The professors present outlined the latest developments in their collaborative projects with Taiwan.
Ghent University’s motto is ‘Dare to think’ and its impressive versatility and interdisciplinary capabilities are embedded in a knowledge-intensive community, surrounded by science parks and bio-incubators.
Several new joint degree programs and research projects are being developed. Ghent University will be offering a joint master’s degree program in philosophy, in conjunction with National Chengchi University, and National Taiwan University and Ghent University are developing a joint master’s degree in photonics and optoelectronics, within the framework of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme. National Sun Yat-Sen University and Ghent University are developing joint Ph.D. programs in the fields of educational studies, and electromechanical and polymer engineering. National Cheng Kung University and Ghent University’s Maritime Technology Division are working together on a Kuroshio Current Energy Project.
The visit ended with a productive discussion with Taiwanese and Belgian students and scholars currently studying and conducting research at Ghent University.
