Pakeriran Screens at San Francisco Main Library to celebrate the Lunar New Year
To celebrate the lunar New Year, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco (TECO) and San Francisco Public Library jointly organized a Taiwanese film screening and activities for children, both held at the Main Library on January 25. The film screened was the award-winning Pakeriran, by director Lekal Sumi Cilangasan which won the Gold Award at the 2018 WorldFest Houston International Film and Video Festival.
Pakeriran is a cross-genre family drama and romance film that tells the story of Futing, an indigenous young man of the Amis people, who returns to his tribe and discovers his identity. He reconnects with his Amis culture by participating in the annual Sacepo' sea festival but finds navigating his homecoming more difficult than he had imagined.
It’s in Mandarin and the Amis language, with English and Chinese subtitles. You can see the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgcZCTTnPO8
The Association of Northern California Chinese Schools organized knotting, calligraphy, shuttlecock-kicking, and other activities for children at the library that day. And personnel from the Education Division of TECO attended the screening and the activities and provided people with brochures about scholarship programs to study Mandarin or for a degree in Taiwan.
