Objectives

  1. Enhance basic toilet facilities in schools by improving outdated or damaged restrooms—particularly those in school buildings over 20 years old with poor ventilation or lighting—to ensure a safe and hygienic environment for all students and staff.
  2. Promote friendly, safe, and sustainable restroom environments, including the installation of accessible toilets and the promotion of gender-inclusive restrooms to foster a diverse and welcoming campus.
  3. Incorporate aesthetic and participatory design, encouraging teachers, students, and staff to engage in planning discussions to build restroom spaces that reflect beauty, warmth, and educational value.

Implementation Strategies

1. Improve outdated restroom facilities to enhance safety and hygiene

  • Prioritize assistance for restrooms in buildings over 20 years old or those with severe issues such as damaged fixtures, drainage problems, and poor ventilation or lighting, ensuring structural, sanitary, and safety improvements.
  • Conduct upgrades based on each school’s actual needs, including floor level adjustments, tile repairs, fixture replacement, drainage improvement, and enhanced lighting.
  • Increase durability and maintenance efficiency by improving water and electrical systems, material quality, and overall maintenance mechanisms to reduce long-term repair costs.

2. Create friendly, equitable, and inclusive restroom environments

  • Adjust fixture types and proportions, reorganize layouts and circulation, or add accessible toilets based on users’ needs.
  • Promote the installation of gender-inclusive restrooms and integrate gender equality education to help students understand the importance of respect, privacy, and safety.

3. Build sustainable restrooms with good ventilation and natural lighting

  • Improve ventilation openings and natural lighting to ensure restrooms remain fresh, dry, and bright—even without artificial lighting—while achieving energy-saving benefits.
  • Introduce sustainability principles by adopting water-saving, energy-efficient, and durable materials to reduce long-term maintenance burdens.

4. Encourage teacher-student participation and integrate aesthetic education into restroom design

  • Encourage schools to adopt “restroom aesthetics,” incorporating local culture, ecology, or campus features to enhance students’ aesthetic experience.
  • Apply participatory design methods, enabling design teams, teachers, and students to jointly discuss improvement proposals, thereby increasing user ownership and reinforcing environmental education.
