Online Schoolwork Assistance Program for Elementary and High School Students in Remote Areas
The Ministry of Education initiated an "Online Schoolwork Assistance Program for Elementary and High School Students in Remote Areas" in 2008. University students, retired and incumbent teachers, as well as interested qualified people were recruited for the program. University students use web cameras to conduct one-on-one teaching with students in remote areas and to help them with questions from their classes. Through one-on-one video teaching and with the assistance of handwriting pads, students make better progress in school. Students have been able to develop confidence in themselves as a result of the patient explanations of the teachers and the well-designed methods such as math games or Chinese idiom solitaire.
Taipei's Fu Jen Catholic University was commissioned as the general planner for the program, while National Chi Nan University in the central region, Wenzao Ursuline College of Languages in the south and National Dong Hwa University on the east coast are also part of the team promoting the service.
Taking Hualian's National Dong Hwa University as an example there are 170 students from the school doing online teaching under the program. Having accumulated enough experience in six months, they have begun contact with National Taitung University, Fo Guang University and National Ilan University, hoping that more universities in the upcoming school year can provide assistance to students in remote areas on the east coast.
