Multi-channel School Admission System Offers Multiple Choices for Technology & Vocational Students
The profile of successful applicants who took the Basic Competence Test shows that many students with high scores have decided to study at vocational high schools, rather than high schools. This is a break from the prevailing stereotype, an indication that students in Taiwan have started to follow their hearts in the choice of a life path.
Over the past few years, society has been witnessing a breakthrough from the stereotype where only students with poor grades went to vocational high schools. Of course, the Ministry of Education has been placing increasing emphasis on vocational education and taken concrete steps to this end. A growing diversity of further education options and a focus on hands-on experience means students are more willing to consider and choose technological and vocational education.
At present, there are three channels for students to apply to four-year colleges or two-year junior colleges: recommended admissions) , applications and admissions by registration and placement. In order to highlight the characteristics of a vocational system where hands-on experience is valued, the quota for recommended admissions will increase by 10% so as to create more opportunities for students.
Admissions to Four-Year Colleges and Two-Year Junior Colleges :
1. Examination Details and Time:
In principle, there will be a single entrance examination for all the four-year colleges and two-year junior colleges for the 2009 academic year. The examination is scheduled for mid-May each year.
2. Scope of Examinations and Subjects Covered:
The Testing Center for Technological & Vocational Education will continue to observe the 2006 Curriculum Guidelines of Vocational High Schools for the subjects covered for uniform entrance examinations of technology and vocational colleges.
3. Admission Channels:
(1) The original three channels, i.e. recommended admissions, applications and admissions by registration and placement, stay the same.
(2) The joint recruitment of high school students for the day sessions of four-year colleges stays the same.
(3) Elite Class Program and Star Program for Vocational High Schools stays the same.
(1) Recommended Admissions to four-year colleges or two-year junior colleges: Any graduating or non-graduating students from vocational high schools, comprehensive high schools and ordinary high schools who have obtained qualifications or participated in competitions.
(2) Applications: Any graduating students from vocational high schools or comprehensive high schools with at least 25 credits earned from professional curricula.
(3) Admissions by registration and placement: Any graduating students from vocational high schools, comprehensive high schools and comprehensive high schools, any non-graduating students with equivalent academic qualifications, or any persons graduating from ordinary high schools at least 1 year previously.
(4) Admissions by registration and placement for day-sessions of four-year colleges: Any graduating or non-graduating students from high schools or comprehensive high schools.
(5) Elite Class Program: Any graduating or non-graduating students from vocational high schools or comprehensive high schools with at least 25 credits earned from professional curricula and grades over 60 and that are qualified for recommended admissions .
(6) Star Program for Vocational High Schools: Any graduating students from vocational high schools or comprehensive high schools with at least 25 credits earned from professional curricula from the same school and ranking in the top 20% for the subjects/curricula throughout the year or qualified for recommended admissions or admissions by application .
